This is TAKANAKUY
A film about a fighting festival in the Peruvian province of Chumbivilcas.
This is Takanakuy. We spent a week deep in the Peruvian Andes, Santo Tomás, Chumbivilcas, to film the real TAKANAKUY during Christmas 2024.
You may know Takanakuy as Peru's wild Christmas fist-fighting festival… but few have seen it like this.
On December 25, the whole community gathers: men, women, even kids settle old grudges (family feuds, land disputes, romantic dramas) with ritual fights in the ring.
Whips crack, crowds cheer, blood boils… but every fight ends in a hug. Debts paid, slates wiped clean, peace restored for the new year.
Filmed on location in Santo Tomás during Takanakuy 2024.
