The story
f you're someone with diverse interests who has struggled to find fulfillment in traditional career paths, it may be time to consider productizing yourself. I'm living proof that you can turn your kaleidoscope of passions into lucrative digital products and services that allow you to live life on your own terms.
A little about my background first: After quitting nursing school at age 20, I decided formalized education wasn't for me. My interests spanned psychology, philosophy, personal development, adventure, travel, filmmaking, business, and software development - an unconventional mix for sure.
For years, I felt restless, like the days were just flashing by without me truly experiencing life. I craved more meaning, exploration, and the freedom to simultaneously pursue all my curiosities.
It wasn't until I took the entrepreneurial leap into building my own array of digital offerings that everything clicked into place. These days, I split my time between freelance filmmaking, running an e-commerce store, and developing two software projects.
While the income potential is exciting (I've had $40,000 months and even single $7,000 days!), what truly drives me is the ability to craft my ideal lifestyle - 60% spent doing what I love (traveling and creating films) while having 40% devoted to family, friends, and passion projects.
So how did I transform myself into a marketable "product?" Here are the key steps:
Get Clear on Your Goals My number one goal was achieving complete freedom - financial, time, and location independence. With that clarity, I was able to start mapping out potential digital income streams that would allow me to live and work from anywhere.
Identify Your Strengths and Solutions What skills, knowledge, and experiences do you have that could potentially solve problems for others? For me, it was things like filmmaking, content creation, digital marketing, software development, and psychology/mindset coaching.
Establish Your Unique Positioning With so many digital creators and coaches, you need a unique angle. Mine was combining adventure travel and personal growth content to inspire living life to the fullest.
Build Your Offerings My initial offerings included an online store, educational video content, freelance filmmaking, and coaching calls. As things grew, I expanded into software/tech products and higher-level programs.
Create Leverage and Automation The key is setting up multiple revenue streams and automations that make your business semi-passive over time. This allows you to spend less time on client work and more on the content you love creating.
Productize Your Knowledge Start turning your skills and methods into tangible products like courses, workshops, tools, templates, or software. These are assets you can sell and scale infinitely as digital products.
The beauty is that you don't have to be an expert from day one. I started out just documenting my own journey and lessons, sharing what I was learning as I went. Over time, as I got better results for myself, my experience and expertise grew.
It's been quite a journey of mistakes, lessons, highs and lows.
But I wouldn't have it any other way - this path of productizing myself has given me a level of freedom and fulfillment I never could've achieved in a regular 9-to-5.
If you resonate with wanting a lifestyle where you blend avocation and vocation, it's worth seriously exploring how you can turn your own passions and experiences into marketable digital products and services. The road is unconventional, but immensely rewarding.
