How I found my purpose in life

Rediscovering Life's Purpose in a Distracted World

In our hyper-connected, constantly stimulated world, more and more people are feeling restless and unfulfilled.

We find ourselves questioning the true purpose of life - is it just about the daily grind of waking up, commuting, working, exercising, eating, sleeping, and repeating until we retire or die? Or is there something deeper we're missing?

This questioning has led to the rise of two opposing mindsets. On one side, the "anti-work" crowd rejects the conventional rat race, believing there must be more to life than being a corporate cog. On the other extreme, we have the "sigma grindset" folks who glorify hustling relentlessly through side gigs and jobs to achieve financial independence and retire early.

However, both groups share a fundamental problem - they don't truly know their life's purpose.

This search for meaning is reflected in troubling societal trends like rising pornography addiction (correlated with a sense of meaninglessness) and the alarming suicide rates among young Asian Americans crushed by immense expectations.

So what's the solution? How can we rediscover our unique sense of purpose amidst the noise and relentless external stimulation of modern living?

The Problem: Our Externalized Attention

The root cause of this existential crisis stems from one major shift - we have increasingly externalized our attention due to technology's proliferation.

We are constantly plugged into podcasts, audiobooks, videos, social media, and other digital inputs, leaving little room to be present with our inner selves.

This habit essentially numbs our ability to feel and understand our core desires, emotional guidance, and innate drivers.

It's like having a numbed tongue - how can you discern your favorite foods if you can't taste anything?

So we end up mimicking what appears to make others happy (e.g., influencer lifestyles) while suppressing our own true inner voices.

Reaching the 'End of Thought'

The antidote lies in doing the opposite of externalizing our attention - we must spend time separating from digital stimuli to reach the "end of thought."

This means allowing the deluge of incessant thoughts and mental chatter to gradually fade until you arrive at a stillness where you can tune into your core inner impulses and values.

Essentially, you'll progress through these stages:

  1. An overload of thoughts, mostly stemming from external stimuli

  2. Intense boredom as your mind craves novelty

  3. If you resist that urge, the thoughts will slow until you hit the "end of thought"

  4. In that clear space, you'll become hyper-aware of your authentic internal drivers

How can you get there?

Try extended periods of digital detox through hiking, meditation retreats, or simply quieting your mind during daily activities.

The concept is akin to the "self-discovery" journeys that have proliferated for good reason - by reducing external noise, you can truly "find yourself."

Discovering Your Personalized Purpose

Once you experience that clarity, something profound happens - you realize there is no universal "purpose of life." Your purpose is intensely personal and individualized based on your core values and inner narrative.

With that self-awareness, you can start aligning your daily lifestyle with that purpose. This is transformative because it suddenly makes life's difficulties feel worthwhile and motivating rather than draining.

You'll wake up energized because you care about what you're working towards.

This self-discovery journey admittedly sounds lofty and impractical for our busy modern lives.

But here's the key: you don't have to take that year-long spiritual sabbatical or move to an ashram.

You can start unveiling your purpose today through simple practices like mindfully going for walks while allowing your thoughts to settle.

Over time, my coaching program has shown that simply developing this sense of life purpose creates an average 58% increase in our clients' overall drive and fulfillment within 12 weeks.

Once you have that energizing "why," the more mundane challenges of "how" to achieve your goals become far easier to surmount.

Breaking Free of Society's Narratives

This process of self-discovery is also liberating because it allows you to author your own life narrative rather than mindlessly adopting society's scripts and expectations, whether that's your

Asian parents' version of success, the FIRE movement's promised land of early retirement bliss, or mainstream culture's superficial status symbols.

You don't have to sacrifice your best decades in pursuit of someone else's definition of the good life, only to face an existential crisis when you get there. And you don't have to outright reject societal norms either. You can simply define your own purpose and let that be your guiding force.

For instance, going after financial independence may still resonate with your values - but it won't be treated as an end-all-be-all goal to chase at all costs.

Or you may align more with the anti-work perspective, yet still find fulfillment in contributing to society through more soulful means than corporate drudgery.

The point is, once you've experienced the profound clarity and motivation that comes from aligning your life with your authentic inner voice, you can integrate different philosophies through that self-defined lens rather than blindly following them like dogma.

In Conclusion: The Path to Fulfillment Begins Within

In our age of constant digital bombardment, it's all too easy to become disconnected from our core selves.

We end up chasing surface-level ideas of success and happiness - only to burn out, feel empty, and sink into purposelessness when we get there.

But this vicious cycle can end when we reclaim our ability to truly listen to our inner guidance. It starts with becoming still amidst the chaos, quieting the external noise, and letting our thoughts settle until we tap into our deepest-held values and drivers.

From that centered space of self-awareness, we can construct lives filled with intention, resilience, and joy because we're no longer drifting rudderless - we have personalized senses of purpose propelling us forward. And with that driving "why," we discover incredible reserves of energy for tackling any obstacle on the "how."

So don't succumb to the mainstream rat race, and don't just rebel mindlessly either. Carve your own path by going inward first, listening to your heart, and aligning your daily reality with that inner wisdom. That's how you'll rediscover lasting fulfillment in this overcrowded world of distraction.
